Frequent breast-feeding is essential for recovery of mom and baby. In many communities, mothers must walk hours every day and night to feed their hospitalized newborns. For weeks on end, others sleep outdoors in hospital courtyards in between their babies’ feedings. The Mothering Care Rooms that we build replace current breast-feeding halls with "nurturies" where mothers can sleep under the same roof as their babies. The Mothering Care Room programs train and empower mothers to provide skin-to-skin therapy, infant massage, optimal handling and care.  This solution improves the mother's and newborn's physical and emotional health while increasing staff resources.

Our goal is not only to reach the professionals within our partner hospitals, but also to impact a community’s attention to infant health and development. The Parent Training DVD would play in breast-feeding halls, waiting areas and sleep-in infant care units for parents and extended family to view.  The DVD series will be marketed to community health organizations in targeted regions.  It will reach traditional midwives and expecting families in remote areas.  Training segments will educate on infant health, development and safety topics.  They will cover newborn care practices which increase nutritional absorption, decrease risk of hypothermia, better growth and weight gain and enhanced lung and heart functioning.
